A gilt-silver jug by Pavel Akimovich Ovchinnikov (1830–1888), Imperial Russian court jeweler, known for fine enamel work, trompe l'oeil silver, niello, and revivalist design. His workshop operated in Moscow, hallmarking began in 1853, and he received the imperial warrant in 1865
Hallmarks: "П.О" (P.O in Cyrillic) for Pavel Ovchinnikov, 1866 assayer's mark, Moscow (St. George hallmark next to the "84").
The jug is engraved to mimic a wrapped birch tree, a classic trompe-l'œil technique that Ovchinnikov pioneered in Russian silver.
