- Lot Description
A Turkish or Balkan heavily embossed silver-mounted flintlock pistol. The barrel is round, smoothbore (diameter: 12.7 mm), and the stock is richly decorated with chased silver overlays, featuring floral and arabesque designs highly characteristic of Ottoman or Balkan-style arms. The butt is bulbous and entirely covered in intricate, raised silverwork a classic Turkish or Albanian form, known as a "lobed" or "helmet-shaped" pommel. The grip is elegantly curved, a hallmark of Ottoman pistols, meant to fit comfortably in the palm and be both functional and stylish.
These pistols were commonly used across the Ottoman Empire, especially in Anatolia and the Balkans. Such pieces were prized as status symbols and often worn by military officers, nobility, or wealthy merchants. More elaborate examples (like this one) were gifts or dowry items, not just weapons.
