An Ottoman Empire kilij saber, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, based on the blade profile and fittings. The blade of characteristic form is wide, slightly curved, with a pronounced yelman (flared tip), typical of kilij swords designed for powerful slashing. The etching (slightly faint) is an Islamic or floral motif visible on the blade, possibly including a maker’s mark or talismanic script. The hilt is a classic Ottoman style with a low-grade silver cross-guard (quillons) flaring outwards and a pistol grip pommel. The grip scales are made of polished horn. The scabbard is decorated with silver cladding with engraved motifs, and green velvet center panels. The loose suspension rings and chape are typical of high-quality Ottoman swords made of the same type of silver as the vrossguard.
The kilij was the preferred saber of Ottoman cavalry and elite guards, including the sipahis and Janissaries. Its design influenced swords across the Islamic world and even into European sabers.
L: 33 in., (84 cm.)
The sword is in very good condition overall, the scabbard fabric shows minor signs of wear and age, all parts are tight.
