A wrought iron spearbutt or lance shoe of elongated conical form, forged for mounting at the base of a spear or cavalry lance shaft. The socket is circular in section with a thickened rim, pierced with a ring of evenly spaced rivet or nail holes for secure attachment to the wooden haft. Below the socket, the body transitions into a faceted, tapering shaft terminating in a blunt point, intended both to counterbalance the weapon and to protect the haft when grounded. The upper portion of the socket is accented with a bulbous, lobed collar, lending both strength and a restrained decorative character typical of late medieval Italian polearms. The surface retains a heavily patinated, pitted iron finish consistent with age and long burial or storage.
Italy, 15th-16th century.
L: 8 1/2 in., (21.5 cm.)
