A finely cast and chased silver miniature chair in Rococo Revival style, the backrest decorated in relief with a fête galante pastoral courting scene after Watteau, highlighted with light enamel or niello tones. The seat upholstered in original red velvet, the apron richly chased with scrolls, rocaille, and shell motifs, supported on cabriole legs with pad feet.
Hallmarks: Clearly struck to the underside lion passant, anchor (for Birmingham), date letter (likely late 19th century), and maker’s mark “S.B & S.Ld†for Syner & Beddoes Ltd., Birmingham.
These charming miniature chairs, often used as novelty trinkets or table ornaments, were popular among English silversmiths of the late Victorian period. The pastoral decoration and Rococo ornament recall 18th-century French designs, reflecting the widespread influence of Louis XV style during the late 19th-century revival period.
H: 5 3/4 in., (14.6 cm.)
Very good overall, with minor tarnish and surface wear consistent with age; slight fraying to the velvet seat upholstery. The hallmarks crisp and legible.
