A finely decorated Indian saddle axe known as a tabarzin. The axe head is forged of steel and entirely covered with dense gold koftgari floral ornament arranged in scrolling vegetal patterns. One side displays a large gold motif at the centre, framed by intricate tendrils worked with precision. The opposite side repeats the same overall style of decoration.
The long tubular shaft is fully gilt and engraved with floral and foliate designs along its entire length. The lower section widens slightly at the terminal and is enriched with additional engraved motifs. Axes of this type were prestigious weapons associated with cavalry officers and noble retainers and were carried both in battle and in ceremonial processions.
L: 20 1/2 in., (52 cm.)
The axe head retains much of its original gold koftgari with minor wear. The gilt shaft shows expected age-related surface marks but remains bright and well preserved. No damage observed. Overall, a very fine example.
