A highly detailed hand-carved wooden figure of Garuda, the mythological bird-like deity from Hindu and Balinese mythology. Shown in a powerful crouching stance with wings dramatically spread in a fan-like arc, the Garuda bears a fierce expression with bared fangs, bulging eyes, and a highly stylized feathered headdress. The musculature of the chest and limbs is boldly defined, and the figure is richly adorned with carved ornaments and decorative motifs on the wings and torso.
The carving is executed from a single block of tropical hardwood, likely jackfruit or teak, and rests on an integral pedestal base with temple-inspired architectural details and floral corner accents. The underside shows concentric ring growth, confirming it is a solid piece of natural wood.
In Balinese and Hindu mythology, Garuda is the mount (vahana) of Vishnu and a guardian figure associated with strength, protection, and divine authority. Figures such as this were traditionally placed in temples, homes, or ceremonial spaces to ward off evil and attract blessings.
Circa 1930–1950.H: 13 in., (33 cm.)
Condition
