- Lot Description
A striking Ottoman khanjar with a deeply carved hilt of blue sapphire glass, imitating the prized hardstones favored in the court workshops of the late Ottoman Empire. The grip and pommel are executed in a faceted architectural form, showing stepped carving and columnar details. The guard is shaped in classic Ottoman style with flaring terminals.
The curved steel blade displays a visible wootz pattern and is decorated at the forte with finely executed gold koftgari work of scrolling vegetal motifs. The blade features a central fuller and secondary shallow panels that emphasize the weapon's curvature.
L: 15 1/8 in., (38.5 cm.)
Condition
The blade retains a clear wootz pattern and bright gold ornament. The glass hilt is in very good condition with minor surface wear consistent with age. No obvious losses. Overall, a well-preserved and impressive example.
