A bust of Richard Wagner (1813–1883) by Boris Aronson (Ukrainian/American, 1900–1980). Plaster, dark painted patina, signed: B. Aronson, impressed at the lower right. Date: ca. 1930s. A dramatic modernist bust of the famed German composer Richard Wagner, rendered in a bold, expressionistic style. The angular modeling, textured surface, and stylized drapery reflect Boris Aronson’s background in Constructivism and avant-garde design. Aronson, best known for his groundbreaking work as a Broadway stage designer (notably for Fiddler on the Roof and Cabaret), was also a trained fine artist and sculptor. This bust showcases his early sculptural talents and deep engagement with cultural and intellectual figures.H: 8 1/4 in., (20.9 cm.)
Painted plaster with a dark brown to black surface coating. Minor surface abrasions and chipping to high points and edges (consistent with plaster works of this age).
