AMERICAN SCHOOL (MID 19TH CENTURY) FOLK ART PORTRAIT OF A MILITIA OFFICER, oil on board, the bust-length view of a bearded gentleman in a uniform with bold epaulettes, and double rows of embossed brass buttons, he seated in a late Windsor thumb-back side chair and holding a pipe. Inscribed in a later hand "Arand Jan Steenblik / 1828-1886" lower left. Housed in an old molded wood frame. Circa 1850. 26" x 20" object, 28 1/2" x 22 3/4" OA. Provenance: Property of a private Virginia collector.
Some warping to board and small abraded areas with associated paint loss. Craquelure throughout. Stray paint marks to edges from crude repainting to worn frame. Possible areas of retouching at bottom.
