VIRGINIA RED-PAINTED YELLOW PINE AND WALNUT SUGAR CHEST, the hinged rectangular lid with simple applied edge moldings over a rectangular case with divided interior above a single drawer fitted with likely original turned wooden pull, all raised on square-tapered legs. Original red-painted surface. Discovered in Franklin Co., VA. First half 19th century. 34 1/2" H, 24 3/4" W, 13 1/2" D. Provenance: From the private collection of James L. Medley, Jr., Lynchburg, VA.
Very good as-found condition with expected usage wear and minor losses. Cracks to panels throughout and hinges possibly reset (no losses or restoration). Lid moldings with some later renailing and front example probably reset (slightly ill-fitting). One interior divider board cracked and detached but present. Drawer runners probably replaced.
