- Lot Description
Ca. 1890-1920 - A highly folk-art dairy thermometer or agricultural cand featuring a naturally curved crook-form handle with a hollow wooden matching hardwood shaft concealing a large floating dairy thermometer. The removal thermometer retains its original printed scale marked "Floating Dairy Thermometer" for milk temperature guidance including "32 degrees freezing", "60 degrees churning", "85 degrees cheese", and "130 degrees scalding". The shaft is deeply branded "RIDLEY & MARSHALL", likely referencing a creamery, dairy supply company, agricultural merchant or regional distributor. The form highly suggests practical farm or creamery use, possibly carried by a dairy inspector, creamery worker, or milk hauler. These agricultural canes are extremely uncommon, especially retaining the original thermometer. Condition shows expected wear from field use including surface abrasions, minor age cracks, but remains highly displayable with excellent visual character. Never had a ferrule; owner applied tape probably to prevent wear at termination. OL-36 1/4x6 1/4"
