Robert Walter Weir was a painter and the longtime Professor of Drawing (1846-1876) for the United States Military Academy at West Point. Among his students were James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Seth Eastman. Two of his sixteen children, John Ferguson and Julian Alden, also became artists. Bernard Irwin was born in Ireland before immigrating with his family to New York in the 1840s. He earned his medical degree in 1852 and was appointed as assistant surgeon to the U.S. Army in 1856. Irwin served during the Civil War, operating one of the first field hospitals at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. He later served as the senior medical officer at West Point from 1873 to 1878.
Not examined outside frame. No apparent inpainting under UV light. The giltwood frame with some losses and areas of retouching and repainting.
