Artist Bio
André Masson (1896–1987) was a French Surrealist painter and printmaker whose work explored the unconscious, myth, and the natural world through automatic drawing and biomorphic abstraction. Associated with André Breton’s Surrealist circle in the 1920s, Masson later influenced the New York School, including artists like Jackson Pollock, with his emphasis on gesture and spontaneity. His imagery often drew from cosmic and elemental forces, as seen in The Sun, aligning with his belief in art as an expression of both inner psyche and universal energies. Today, his works are represented in major collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, and the Tate.
