A monumental wool tapestry by Calman Shemi, signed at the lower left. Measuring approximately 93 x 60 1/2 in. including frame, the work exemplifies Shemi’s unique approach to textile art, merging expressive color fields with abstract, painterly composition. Calman Shemi (b. 1939) is an Argentinian-born, Israeli-based artist recognized for his innovative use of textiles, painting, and mixed media. A student of sculpture under Rudi Lehmann, Shemi later developed his own techniques for “soft painting” and textile works, where fibers are layered and compressed to achieve painterly effects. His art often balances abstraction with expressive emotion, earning him international exhibitions and commissions.
