A Regency Sterling Silver Meat Dish / Serving Tray
Maker: John Houle, London, 1816Of substantial oval form, with gadrooned border applied with shells at intervals and fitted with bold shell-form handles. Hallmarked on reverse for John Houle, London, 1816. A fine example of Regency silver, combining functionality with refined ornament.
Dimensions: 24 x 16 3/4 in.
Weight: approx. 150 troy oz.
Condition: Overall good; light surface wear consistent with age and use.Context
John Houle was an accomplished London silversmith of the early 19th century, producing silver that reflected the elegant yet bold taste of the Regency era. Large meat dishes and serving trays such as this were central to the formal dining table, prized for both their utility and their ability to display wealth and status.
