An Important Pair of Late 18th-Century Imperial Russian Cobalt Blue Glass and Gilt-Bronze Candelabras/Girondles
Era of Catherine the Great (1762–1796)
A remarkable pair of three-light candelabra, each featuring scrolling candle branches rising from a cobalt blue glass baluster vase mounted in finely cast and chased gilt bronze. The central faceted obelisk surmounts the composition, suspending chains adorned with crystals and amethyst drops, and crowned with crescent moon finials. These richly decorative works embody the opulence of Russian decorative arts during the reign of Catherine II, blending neoclassical taste with the splendor of courtly luxury.
In manner of Johann Zech
Dimensions: 23 5/8 x 11 5/8 in. each
Condition: Overall good; minor wear to gilt consistent with age, glass intact, crystals and mounts with light surface wear.
Context
Under Catherine the Great (r. 1762–1796), Russia experienced a flowering of the decorative arts, informed by European neoclassicism yet infused with imperial grandeur. Luxurious objects such as these candelabra, combining gilt bronze with vibrant cobalt glass and semiprecious stones, were produced for aristocratic interiors, reflecting the wealth, taste, and international aspirations of the Russian court. Today, such rare survivals are highly prized for their historical associations and craftsmanship, embodying the splendor of the late 18th-century Imperial decorative tradition.
