Attributed to Archibald Knox
British Art & Crafts Coral and Gold Necklace
United Kingdom, circa 1890s
A refined and evocative necklace attributed to Archibald Knox, exemplifying the synthesis of Art Nouveau, Liberty, and Art & Crafts aesthetics that defined late nineteenth-century British design. Expertly crafted in 18-karat yellow gold with a brushed finish, the necklace features an intricately constructed geometric pendant suspended from a 16.5-inch paperclip-link chain of matching gold.
At its center, the pendant presents a finely carved Italian salmon-red coral cameo depicting Flora, the Roman goddess of spring and renewal, rendered in graceful profile to the left. Her flowing hair is entwined with organic motifs, emblematic of the Art Nouveau reverence for natural form. The design unites Neo-Gothic linearity with the lyrical ornamentation of the Liberty style, foreshadowing the modernist restraint of the early twentieth century.
Weight approximately 12.34 dwt.
Pendant dimensions 36 × 50 mm (1.42 × 1.97 in.).
Chain length 16.5 in. (42 cm).
Tested as 18-karat gold (.750).
Attribution
In the manner of Archibald Knox (British, 1864–1933), whose designs for Liberty & Co. epitomized the confluence of Celtic, natural, and geometric forms central to the Arts & Crafts ethos.
Condition
Excellent overall condition; minor wear consistent with age. The coral carving is secure and intact.
Notes
A superb example of late Victorian craftsmanship merging artistic movements of its era, this necklace reflects the transition from the ornamental richness of the nineteenth century to the elegant modernism that would define early twentieth-century British design.
