British Art & Crafts Coral and Gold Necklace
United Kingdom, circa 1890sA refined and evocative necklace attributed to Archibald Knox, exemplifying the synthesis of Art Nouveau, Liberty, and Art & Crafts aesthetics that defined late nineteenth-century British design. Expertly crafted in 18-karat yellow gold with a brushed finish, the necklace features an intricately constructed geometric pendant suspended from a 16.5-inch paperclip-link chain of matching gold.
At its center, the pendant presents a finely carved Italian salmon-red coral cameo depicting Flora, the Roman goddess of spring and renewal, rendered in graceful profile to the left. Her flowing hair is entwined with organic motifs, emblematic of the Art Nouveau reverence for natural form. The design unites Neo-Gothic linearity with the lyrical ornamentation of the Liberty style, foreshadowing the modernist restraint of the early twentieth century.
