LeRoy Neiman (American, 1921–2012)
Two Jocks, 1959
An early oil painting on masonite by LeRoy Neiman, titled Two Jocks. Signed by the artist at the lower right and again on the reverse, inscribed with the title and date, 1959. Measuring approximately 12 3/4 x 15 in. (panel), and 16 1/2 x 19 in. with frame, the painting depicts two jockeys, rendered in Neiman’s expressive, gestural style that would later define his career. This work illustrates his emerging interest in sporting subjects, capturing both the vibrancy of color and the energy of movement.
Dimensions: 12 3/4 x 15 in. (panel); 16 1/2 x 19 in. (with frame)
Condition: Overall good.
Provenance: Frank J. Oehlschlaeger Galleries, Chicago, Illinois. Accompanied by an original brochure for Neiman’s exhibition held October 9–November 6, 1959 (though Two Jocks is not listed among the works in the brochure). Also included is a handwritten letter from Neiman to a Mr. Stanton, in which the artist explains the circumstances surrounding the exhibition’s quiet opening, noting publicity delays caused by a New York dock strike. In the letter, Neiman formally invites Mr. Stanton to attend the opening on October 9, 1959, requesting his assistance in securing coverage of the event. While the letter does not reference this painting specifically, it provides valuable context to Neiman’s early career and the exhibition connected with this period.
