Designer Bio
Harry Bertoia (1915–1978) was an Italian-born American sculptor and designer whose groundbreaking work with metal defined much of Mid-Century Modern furniture design. After emigrating to the United States, he studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames before joining Knoll in the early 1950s. His Diamond Chair (1952) transformed industrial wire into an elegant sculptural form, combining strength, comfort, and visual transparency. Beyond furniture, Bertoia achieved acclaim as a sculptor, particularly for his “Sonambient” sound sculptures. Today, his designs for Knoll are recognized as modernist classics, celebrated for their artistic ingenuity and timeless appeal.
