A Rare George IV Sterling Silver Salver with Fitted Case
Maker: William Eley II, London, 1825
Retailed by Rundell, Bridge & Rundell
Of exceptional scale and quality, this richly decorated salver is pierced and chased in high relief with mythological and classical figures, including knights, Roman-style soldiers, nymphs, and hunting scenes with wild boars. Rococo-style acanthus leaves, shells, and scrolling motifs intertwine with the figural scenes to create a dynamic composition of sculptural depth and intricacy. The salver rests on bold scroll feet and is accompanied by its original wooden fitted case, lined and bearing the original retailer’s paper label for Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, Crown Jewelers to King George IV.
Dimensions: 2 3/4 in. high x 25 1/2 in. diameter
Fitted Case: 4 3/4 in. high x 26 1/2 in. square
Weight: Over 200 troy oz.
Condition: Overall good; minor wear consistent with age, crisp chasing and detail, fitted case with expected age wear but intact.
Provenance (anecdotal): Reportedly presented as a gift to the Duke of Clarence, later King William IV.
Context
William Eley II, an esteemed London silversmith, produced works of significant scale and refinement in the early 19th century, many retailed by Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, the premier Crown jewelers of the Georgian era. The present salver, with its elaborate mythological and hunting scenes, is a rare survival of both artistry and provenance. Its monumental weight and size, coupled with the survival of the original fitted case, underscores the importance of this piece as a likely presentation commission of royal or aristocratic significance.
