Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923–1997)
Drowning Girl
Offset Lithograph
An offset lithograph after Roy Lichtenstein’s iconic 1963 painting, Drowning Girl. Measuring 11 3/8 in. square, with frame 22 1/2 in. square. This work captures one of Lichtenstein’s most celebrated Pop Art images, appropriated from a 1962 DC Comics panel, in which bold lines, flat planes of color, and Ben-Day dots elevate commercial imagery into high art. The image exemplifies Lichtenstein’s exploration of melodrama, mass culture, and the boundaries between originality and reproduction.
Dimensions: Image: 11 3/8 x 11 3/8 in. | With frame: 22 1/2 x 22 1/2 in.
Condition: Overall good; light toning and surface wear consistent with age, frame with minor handling marks.
Artist Bio
Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) was a leading figure of the Pop Art movement, renowned for his bold reimaginings of comic book imagery and advertising. Drawing upon mass media sources, he transformed everyday popular culture into fine art through his distinctive use of mechanical-looking brushwork and Ben-Day dots. Alongside contemporaries Andy Warhol and James Rosenquist, Lichtenstein helped redefine the relationship between art and consumerism. Today, his works are held in the collections of major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and remain among the most recognizable icons of 20th-century art.
