John Wilmin Figg (British, Mid-19th century)
Victorian Silver and Etched Glass Claret Jug
London, 1857, No. 2081
An elegant Victorian silver and etched glass claret jug by John Wilmin Figg, London, 1857. The hinged cover is surmounted by a finely cast lion rampant holding a shield, above a chased border of fruiting vines within a beaded edge. The deep collar is richly repoussé-decorated with the mask of Bacchus, emblematic of wine and festivity. The glass body is gracefully etched with foliate scrolls, exemplifying mid-19th-century craftsmanship and refinement.
Dimensions: 11 in. (height) × 7 in. (width)
Condition: Minor nick to the bottom edge of the glass; overall good condition with age-appropriate wear.
Context
John Wilmin Figg was an accomplished London silversmith of the Victorian period, known for his elaborately chased and sculptural silverwork. The present jug combines mythological iconography with refined neoclassical detailing, reflecting the era’s fascination with opulence and revivalist design. Claret jugs such as this were symbols of luxury and conviviality in Victorian society, frequently produced as presentation pieces or for display in grand dining services.
