Kauer Ceremonial Jacket, Sumatra, Indonesia. Embroidered cowry (nassa) shells and fine mirror work. circa early 20th c. These jackets were made entirely from one woven fabric; the finely woven pattern on small panel on rear of jacket is created by supplementary weft technique. These highly valued jackets are no longer made and were originally made and worn by young, unmarried Kauer women in the western mountainous region of southern Sumatra.
