Victorian gold watch keys and fobs featuring fox hunting motifs represent a peak in 19th-century "sporting jewelry." These pieces served as both functional tools for winding pocket watches and status symbols that signaled a gentleman's passion for the "thrill of the hunt". Watch Keys: Before stem-winding watches became standard in the late 19th century, keys were essential to wind the watch and set its movement. Fobs: Originally, "fob" referred to the small pocket in breeches where a watch was kept. The term later shifted to describe the ornamental charms attached to a watch chain that helped the wearer pull the watch out of the pocket. Based on Fox's documents, we believe she made this necklace herself by sourcing the charms and fobs from different locations. She purchased several of the fobs and charms from a Maryland antique store in 1997 and 2006. Fox even decided the order of charms should follow from the left: fox seal, orange stone engraved, add ring, fox mask, ruby eyes, small fox key, running fox, 3-d, plan, 2-d fox, furred, 2-d fox with the center having the large Fox gold mask. And from the right: large fox key, fox seal, 3-d, onyx stone, round enamel fox, fox tie-tack, 3-d, small fox head with stirrup, furred, 2-d fox. She wanted all of the foxes to face outward with 4 spaces between each charm/seal.
