Claude - Joseph Désiré Charnay (1828 - 1915) was a traveler and archeologist known for his exploration of Mexico and Central America, as well as for his use of photography in order to document his discoveries. In this work, he describes in detail his expedition and archeological work from 1880 to 1883. Some of the archeological sites visited by the French explorer include Veracruz, Mexico City, Tula, Teotihuacan, Palenque, Chichen-Itza, Uxmal, Tikal, etc.
