The collages of self-taught Milwaukee artist Della Wells have been exhibited in Europe and throughout the United States. They are regularly represented at the Outsider Art Fair in New York. Prestigious publications such as Self-taught, Outsider and Folk Art by Betty-Carol Sellen have covered Wells. A play inspired by her life, Don't Tell Me I Can't Fly, was performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. In 2016, Wells was one of two recipients of the City of Milwaukee's Artist of the Year Award.
A lifelong resident of Milwaukee, as a child Wells invented stories and characters based on her mother's recollections of growing up in North Carolina during the 1920s through the 1940s. Wells used these stories to escape the uncertain realities generated by her mother's mental illness and her father's rage. She did not start making art until she was in her early forties because, she claims, "being a master of your spiritual self does not come until you understand where you came from." Here, in Liddie Kanye's House, we see "Mamboland," Wells's spiritual, interior
world where black women rule. The red, white, and blue flags in the background represent the promises made by the United States to black people-promises that should be kept.

MOWA will offer a complimentary delivery service for anyone living within a 120 mile radius of MOWA in West Bend. Delivery dates and times must be arranged by mutual agreement. Buyers outside the stated radius of MOWA may arrange to have the artwork packed and shipped at the buyer’s expense through Guardian Fine Art Services in Milwaukee. Please know that it may take longer than usual this year to get purchased pieces into the hands of buyers due to the extenuating circumstances currently caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. All merchandise purchased must be removed from the premises within (14) days from the day of the auction. Smaller items may be taken immediately following the Auction once payment has been processed and approved. The Museum shall have no liability for any damage or loss to property left on its premises.
