Lot #04: Paul Maloney V:3, 2017
Porcelain with glaze
30 x 10 x 8 in.
Ceramics Monthly's Emerging Artist of 2020 Paul Maloney creates works remarkable for their layers of stream-of-consciousness freestyle writing, dripped glazes, and sgraffito mark-making. His vessels sport lids similarly built from a free-form language of abstract shapes that mimic figures on a "stage." Maloney views his vessels as visual journals of his personal history-molded, written, and lived.
Born in Houston, Maloney obtained a BA in Art History and a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Georgia. He later earned an MFA in Ceramics from Indiana University-Bloomington. He has worked throughout the United States, notably at Haystack Mountain School of Craft, Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio, and Penland School of Crafts, among others. Recently, at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Maloney assisted a team of artists in fabricating the new Washroom Projects for the Art Preserve Museum.
