- Lot Description
An early and evocative Japanese woodblock print diptych from Ehon Azuma Asobi (“Picture Book of the Pleasures of the East”), designed by the celebrated ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎) circa 1802. This composition illustrates a serene view along the Sumida River, with elegantly dressed figures traveling by boat beneath parasols, set against a softly rendered landscape of low hills, trees, and distant shoreline. The upper register contains printed text and calligraphy consistent with the illustrated book format, integrating poetry and scene in the refined Edo-period tradition. Executed in delicate monochrome line work with subtle hand-applied color washes, the print reflects Hokusai’s early career style, prior to his later iconic works. Presented as a diptych and housed in a simple wooden frame with mat, the sheet shows expected age toning and handling wear, with an old gallery label affixed verso. A scarce and historically significant example from one of Hokusai’s early illustrated books, offering both aesthetic charm and strong collector appeal. Approx. frame size (in): 11.75 x 15.75 x 0.75, Approx. print size (in): 7.75 x 12.
