This striking Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitsuya depicts Tsuchiyama, one of the stations along the famed Tōkaidō road, a subject celebrated by many ukiyo-e artists of the Edo period. The composition presents a lively scene of travelers and attendants moving through a wooded riverside landscape, with tall pines, flowing water, and distant mountains creating a serene yet dynamic setting. Distinctive details such as the tall standards topped with feathery tassels and the figures in traditional dress convey both movement and narrative, characteristic of Yoshitsuya’s expressive style. The vertical cartouche bearing Japanese characters identifies the location, while the artist’s seal is visible within the image. Printed on delicate paper, the work shows age-related toning, wear, and minor discoloration consistent with its period, adding to its authenticity and charm.
