- Lot Description
For your consideration is this 1968 D. Gottlieb & Company pinball machine titled, "Royal Guard" designed by Ed Krynski. David Gottlieb, a Chicago-born businessman and inventor, established D. Gottlieb & Co. in 1927. During the pinball machine and other arcade game heyday of the 1940s and 1950s, the company was one of the industry's top producers. Pinball machines made by D. Gottlieb & Co. were renowned for being innovative, high-quality, and frequently embellished with vibrant, intricate artwork and designs. D. Gottlieb & Co. produced pinball machines in addition to other arcade games like mechanical baseball, shooting, and fortune tellers. The business was a pioneer in the development of the electro-mechanical pinball machine, which combined mechanical and electronic elements to replace earlier, purely mechanical designs. Until the 1970s, when the popularity of video games and other forms of electronic entertainment started to surpass that of pinball and other arcade games, D. Gottlieb & Co. remained a significant player in the arcade gaming industry. The company was eventually sold to Columbia Pictures in 1977, and after that, the Premier Technology Group bought its assets. Until the late 1990s, this company produced pinball machines under the Gottlieb brand. The pinball machine's back glass shows a parade of four royal guards in their red uniforms marching down the street as spectators watch from the sidewalk. The back glass reads at the top, "Gottlieb's Royal Guard" in red and yellow lettering with the image of the parade below it. On the bottom middle it shows the point tracker for the player and below that it reads, "MFD. By D. Gottlieb & Co. Chicago, Ill." in black lettering against a white background. The playing field shows two flippers, four pop bumpers, two slingshots, six standup targets, four snap targets, and dual outlanes. The graphics on the playing field include a guide woman, a royal guard in his tall hat holding his sword in front of a building, and another man and woman. The pinball machine shows colors of red, black, white, yellow, green, blue, brown and pink. The pinball machine shows good condition overall with very slight wear to the paint throughout the years of use and its vintage age. One target is chipped on the playing field and the rubber on the bumpers are worn and show some cracking. The internal wiring shows good condition with no cut or broken wires present. The machine has not been tested for functionality. The machine measures 53 1/2" L x 25 13/16" W x 69 3/4" H.
