Bark Girard
Pastel on Paper
From the Consignor:
My mother (Peter's mother, Muriel Stuart) purchased a pastel of a bark with three masts with sails furled, flying the Girard Line flag (fig. 21). On the backboard of the pastel are details of the ship compiled by the owner of the bark, William L. Langer. He wrote: “The Girard is a bark, (a three -mast vessel with the first two masts square rigged and the mizzen mast fore and aft rigged), which sailed out of Dennis, Massachusetts, but it was built in Newport, Rhode Island in 184? She weigh ed 200 tons, was 94 feet in length, 25 1/2 feet in breadth, and she drew 6 feet.†At the New Bedford Customs House in Massachusetts, we looked up original documents about the Girard Line and found her registration in New Bedford was on August 15, 1856, and her captain was Theophelus Chase. The ship had previously been registered in Boston in 1855 as a coastal freight carrier since it had a single deck. My mother loved the shapes of the dark clouds indicating a coming storm.
