Crewel Embroidery Sewing Bag
Chester County, Pennsylvania, circa 1755
The crewel embroidery sewing bag has the initials "E. C." at the bottom center on the face of the bag. It is a rectangular in shape with an 8-inch vertical opening at the top center backing to put in unfinished work. The back is made from plain coarse linen and the front is finer weft-faced linen. The face is elaborately decorated with wool crewel-work embroidery. Eight fanciful flower motifs, three on the top, three on the bottom, and one on each side with a multicolored colored dog and bird in the center. The embroidered is in multiple shades of colors: red, pink, yellow, green, and blue, and red. The face and back of the bag are joined by a pale blue silk tape folded in half and at the top are two 1 ½ in loops to attach the bag to the waist. The bag is mounted in a contemporary frame.

Several scattered losses to blue trim. Scattered discoloration and foxing. Heavy losses in lower corners and along right edge. Lighter losses along top edge. Other scattered losses. Initialed “EC”. Colors are still fairly vibrant.
