John B. McAlister was born April 24, 1833 in PA. His first wife, Margaretta E. Rice, was born July 13, 1837 in PA. She was the daughter of John Rice (Reis) and Margaretha Ickes. John and Margaretta were married Dec. 8, 1858 in New Bloomfield, Perry County, PA. Their first three children were born in New Bloomfield: Thomas A. (b.1860), Margaret E. (b. 1861), Maria Lillian (b. 1863), John Richard (b. 1867) in Oil City, PA. Margaretta died on Aug. 23, 1870 in New Bloomfield. In the 1880 Census John remarried Emma born in Canada in 1841. John B. McAlister was a lawyer for the oil companies. In Aug. 1859, Col. Edwin Drake's drilling of the first commercially successful oil well in Titusville, PA changed the region and the world forever. Wells sprang up throughout the region spawning "boom towns"" and the oil boom brought great wealth to the area.
