Robert Crawford Priming Horn
Together with a smaller priming horn.
A "Robert Crawford" served in: Col. John Hathorn's 4th regiment, Orange County, New York; Col. Levi Pawling's 3rd regiment- Ulster County, New York; Col. Johannes Hardenburgh's 4th regiment, Ulster County, New York. As the boundaries of Ulster and Orange County shifted several times in this area the same Robert Crawford may have done all this service. He is probably related, though not in direct line, to Col. James Crawford (1793-1864), Hellen Crawford's father, in Crawford, N.Y. See Hellen Crawford's needlework article in Folk Art magazine and write-up.
Provenance:
Elliott and Grace Snyder, South Egremont, Massachusetts.
4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm.), and 8 1/2 in. (21.6 cm.)
Small priming horn incised R. Crawford at base just above cross-hatched border. Small chip to base likely at a former nail hole. Larger horn with chip to base and spout. Horn is undecorated. Each with general wear consistent with age and use. Smaller horn may have been varnished. Surface has a shine to it. Otherwise, good condition.
