Rockingham Glazed Yellowware Pitcher and MugBoth with frogs inside, mug from Ohio c. 1860.
"Eleanor Schcenck" Rockingham Ale Pitcher, attributed to Thomas Locker, South Amboy, New Jersey, circa 1852-1858
Thomas Locker was born in 1823 in Longton, England. He was employed at the American Pottery Co and then in 1852 he and James Carr rented the Swan Hill Pottery in South Amboy, NJ from Charles Fish. "A fellow potter of Thomas Locker said that Locker had made pitchers of this type (hunting scene with frog at bottom) at Swan Hill Pottery" from the Pottery and Porcelain of NJ 1688-1900, p.52. Locker was there from 1852-1870s. Daniel Greatbach and Enoch Moore were owners of the pottery from 1856-57. A curator at the New Jersey State Museum has identified the mold as being made under Charles Coxon who rented Swan Hill Pottery from 1858-1860. Whoever was the owner, Thomas Locker most likely made the pitcher. An identical pitcher is shown in The Early Makers of Handcrafted Earthenware and Stoneware in Central and Southern New Jersey by M. Lelyn Branin, p. 162.
Eleanor Schenck (1783-July1858) was married to Daniel Schenck. They lived in Pleasant Valley, NJ. They were first cousins and had no children. Eleanor died a few months after Coxon started at Swan Hill Pottery.
