The John Brown Blue Painted Sack-Back Windsor Armchair

Approximately two dozen related chairs survive. A nearly identical chair with I.Brown carved into the arm is in the collection of the Rhode Island Historical Society (acc. no. 1970.82.1 and RIF4339). Other related chairs are noted in the Rhode Island Furniture Archive (see RIF1268, RIF2098, RIF3974, RIF3975, RIF5440, RIF7160).

Crest and back rail with later painted lines to simulate bamboo. Backrest later reinforced with two nails on each end at juncture with arms. Crack and repair to base of left arm support. Some light worm damage to seat near central peak and on underside. Right arm support later glued. Scattered paint flaking and losses. Some pins popping. Otherwise good sturdy condition.
