Handwritten letter from Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl of Mountbatten of Burma, uncle of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and second cousin to King George VI, dated January 12, 1934, and addressed to Surgeon Rear Admiral Dudding. Reads "Please forgive my writing to you direct but I have been requested by an old shipmate of mine, Chief Electrical Artificer E.A. Rail, to support his application for the post of Resident Electrician at the R.N. Hospital, Stonehouse and am unaware to whom a letter should be addressed in these circumstances. I would not have taken this step naturally, had it been a service appointment but I understand it is a civilian appointment which would he open to Rail as? his time expiring in April. I have never had Rail under me in a service capacity but during the ? 1923-1926 commission he was a great assistance to me in running the ship's dance club and I know that at that time he was thought highly of by his Torpedo lieutenant and by the members of the Dance Club....Again, many apologies for troubling you, but I did not like to refuse a request from someone who had been so helpful to me in the past. Louis Mountbatten, Commander R.N." Size: 5 7/8 x 7 3/4"
