Rebound in modern black cloth backstrip over red cloth boards, boards ruled in gilt, gilt-stamped label on front board, spine lettered in gilt, later endleaves. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY JOHN WESLEY ANDERSON ON THE ORIGINAL FIRST BLANK: "Sincerely yours, Dr. J. W. Anderson 1718 Jackson Street Dallas, Texas. to Mrs. Estiger [?] Green, 3313 Thomas Ave Dallas, Texas Jan 1, 1939."
Condition
Corners worn, some rubbing to boards, text with occasional marginal toning. Near fine.
- Provenance
Anderson (1861-1947) was a dentist in Dallas, TX (the third African-American doctor to practice in Dallas). Although biracial, he fought tirelessly to improve the life of African-American citizens in that city. Through his business acumen, he amassed great wealth, which he used to fund scholarships and grants to improve the life and education of African-Americans. Today, the city of Dallas named a street in his honor.
