[AFRICAN AMERICANA]. BREWER, J. Mason (1896-1975). The Life of John Wesley Anderson... in Verse... [Dallas, TX: Clyde C. Cockrell, 1938]. 8vo. Illustrated. Publisher's full green cloth, front board and spine stamped in gilt. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY ANDERSON WITH HIS ADDRESS ON THE FFEP.
Condition
Some rubbing, mild scuffing to binding, light toning to endleaves, faint inkstamp on ffep. Near fine.
- Provenance
Anderson (1861-1947) was a dentist in Dallas, TX (the third African-American doctor to practice in Dallas). Although biracial, he fought tirelessly to improve the life of African-American citizens in that city. Through his business acumen, he amassed great wealth, which he used to fund scholarships and grants to improve the life and education of African-Americans. Today, the city of Dallas named a street in his honor.
