Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1945. 8vo. 249 pp. Publisher's full black cloth, spine lettered in yellow, publisher's unclipped ("$2.50") dust jacket. FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S RARE FIRST NOVEL, A PROTEST NOVEL.
Condition
Light rubbing to cloth binding, some offsetting to endleaves, endleaves and text a bit toned; jacket spine a bit sunned, some faint dampstaining and a few tears to jacket spine, some rubbing, soiling to jacket panels. Very good.
- Provenance
The basis of the 1968 film of the same name, directed by Charles Martin (the film differed quite a bit from the novel). This book is compared to Richard Wright’s Native Son for its bold depiction of “the shattering effects of racism..."
