  [AFRICAN AMERICANA]. [MOTT, Abigail (1795-1846), compiler]. Biographical Sketches and Interesting Anecdotes of Persons of Color... New York: Trustees of the Residuary Estate of Lindley Murray, [1839]. 8vo. 408 pp. Contemporary full calf, spine ruled in gilt, black gilt morocco lettering label. EARLY (THIRD?) EDITION OF THIS RARE COLLECTION OF BIOGRAPHIES OF PROMINENT AFRICAN-AMERICANS AND POETRY BY A LEADING ABOLITIONIST OF THE DAY.

  Condition

  Binding worn, soiled, hinges starting, rear endleaves with some light chipping, wear, endleaves and text a bit toned, foxed, thumbsoiled, contemporary ink notes on ffep (a treatment for Lumbago, and instructions on how to "Keep Butter" from going bad). Still, a good copy.

• Provenance

  First published in 1826, this early edition was expanded and corrected. This book has brief biographies of Phillis Wheatley, Ignatius Sancho, Paul Cuffe, Toussaint L'Ouverture, Prince Naimbana, and more. The next section is a collection of articles about the difficulties of African-Americans in the United States and elsewhere. The final section is a poetry collection is by several different authors.
