[AFRICAN AMERICANA]. WALKER, Margaret (1915-1998). Jubilee. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1966. 8vo. 497 pp. Publisher's full green cloth, front board and spine stamped in blue, spine stamped in black, publisher's unclipped ("$5.95") dust jacket. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE TITLE-PAGE: "Very best wishes to Joe and Aaronetta Pierce Sincerely, Margaret Walker Chicago July 29, 1995".
Spine toned (especially at head- and tailcap), some rubbing and occasional light soiling to binding; two tape repairs to jacket verso, jacket spine toned and edgeworn, some toning, rubbing, foxing to jacket panels, rear jacket panel and flap lightly dampstained. Good.
This novel was Walker's only novel (she was a prominent poet and educator). This is her second published book, based upon her great-grandmother's life as a slave; it reportedly took her 30 years to write. The success of this novel inspired more African-American women to publish novels in the 1970s.
