Garden City: Doubleday & Company, [1956]. 8vos. 2 volumes. Publisher's bindings, second volume in price-clipped dust jacket, first volume lacking dust jacket. Bindings rubbed, lightly soiled, first volume with later price sticker on ffep., dust jacket toned, worn, soiled. Fair. KANSAS CITY EDITION, VOLUME 2 INSCRIBED BY TRUMAN ON THE DEDICATION PAGE: "Best wishes to Mrs. Ida Carpenter from Harry truman 8/20/58".

Illustrated. 468 pp. Publisher's full gray cloth, front board and spine stamped in black and gilt, publisher's price-clipped dust jacket. Light rubbing to cloth binding, ownership markings on front and rear endleaves; jacket toned, rubbed, soiled. Good. EARLY EDITION, SIGNED BY STRAUSS ON THE FFEP. (previous owner's markings at top and bottom of page, not interfering with Strauss' signature).
- Provenance
Lewis L. Strauss was one of the founders of the United States Atomic Energy Commission under Truman, and had advocated for the atomic bombs to be used on a symbolic target as a warning, instead of dropping them on Japanese cities. He was denied the position of Commerce Secretary due to various in-fighting, and controversies. Of note, he was portrayed by Robert Downey, Jr. in the 2023 film, Oppenheimer, for which Downey won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
