TIBULLUS (d. 19 B. C.). The Works of Tibullus, Containing His Four Books of Love-Elegies. Translated by Mr. Dart. London: T. Sharpe, 1720. 8vo. [4], [xl], lii, 264 pp. Wood-engraved frontispiece, head- and tail-pieces, initial letters. With errata page. Some leaves misnumbered (text is complete nonetheless). Contemporary full calf, boards double-ruled in gilt, rebacked in modern calf, ruled in gilt, burgundy gilt morocco lettering label. THE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF TIBULLUS.
Condition
Boards worn, corners partially restored and bumped, some cracking to boards, hinges starting, rfep. is loose (yet present), signature on ffep., old book description on fp., text toned and a bit wrinkled. Still, very good.
- Provenance
John Dart (d. 1730), the translator, was an English lawyer, cleric and antiquary. He also wrote Westminster Abbey A Poem (1721) and History and Antiquities of the Cathedral Church of Canterbury (1726). Tibullus was an Ancient Roman author of poetry and elegies, quite famous in his day. Early English translations of his work are uncommon. ESTC lists 11 copies, only 3 of which are in the U. S.
