[ARCHITECTURE]. WOODWARD, C. M. A History of the St. Louis Bridge... St. Louis: G. I. Jones and Company, 1881. Folio. Illustrated with 46 diagrams, elevations and photographs. 391 pp. Publisher's full black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE HISTORY OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ST. LOUIS BRIDGE (now known as the Eads Bridge).
Condition
Spine sunned, joints starting, boards and spines edgeworn, corners bumped, hinges cracking, library inkstamps on endleaves, title-page, and several other text leaves, a few gutters overopened. Fair.
- Provenance
This bridge was the first to use steel for its superstructure, and a cantilever technique in construction. It is a National Historical Landmark. It was designed by James Buchanan Eads (1820-1887), who has written a brief introduction for this book, and has a portrait of him.
