[BOCCACCIO, Giovanni (1313-1375)]. The Decameron, or Ten Days Entertainment of Boccace. Translated from the Italian. London: R. Dodsley, 1741. 8vo. viii, 592, [8, ads] pp. Engraved frontisportrait. Contemporary full calf, rebacked to style in modern brown calf, gilt. FIRST EDITION OF THIS ENGLISH TRANSLATION.
Condition
Boards worn, scuffed, endleaves offset, text and endleaves toned, some occasional minor soiling, foxing, location label from the library of Kimbolton Castle on fp. Very good.
- Provenance
"The only good translation in English..." (Sidney Oldall Addy, writing in the DNB). The anonymous translator has been identified as Charles Balguy (1708-1767), a physician from Derbyshire, who had written several medical treatises. See Strauss, Robert Dodsley, p. 322.
