[BOOKS ABOUT BOOKS]. WISE, T. J. (1859-1937). The Ashley Library. A Catalogue of Printed Books, Manuscripts, and Autograph Letters Collected by T. J. Wise. London: Printed for Private Circulation, 1922-1936. 4tos. Frontispieces and plates. 11 volumes. Publisher's cream buckram over bevelled boards, boards and spines stamped in gilt. FIRST EDITION OF THIS CATALOGUE, ONE OF ONLY 200 COPIES PRINTED.
Condition
Spines toned, some rubbing, soiling to bindings, a few gutters overopened, some tissue guards torn. Still, near fine.
- Provenance
The Ashley Library (now housed at the British Library), was Wise's lasting achievement (he lived on Ashley street, hence the name). Wise was a noted bibliographer and collector, who partially funded his collection by indulging in literary forgery and theft.
