[BOOKSELLERS]. WELLS, Gabriel (1861-1946). Intimations. London: Constable and Company, 1927. 8vo. [158] pp. Publisher's full yellow cloth, printed paper label on spine, publisher's unclipped (no price) dust jacket.
Light rubbing to cloth, endleaves, edge of text-block and a few pages foxed; jacket toned, foxed, edgeworn with several marginal small chips and tears. Very good. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, INSCRIBED BY WELLS ON THE HALF-TITLE: "To De Imre Josinka - Herczeg with sincere regards Gabriel Wells New York, June 11, 1934." Wells was one of the most important and prominent antiquarian booksellers in the United States and the U. K. in the early 20th century. He is perhaps most famous for breaking up a copy of the Gutenberg Bible and marketing the individual pages as "noble fragments"; he also owned the "Great Omar" modern manuscript copy of the Rubaiyat in a sumptuous binding, which was, unfortunately, lost on the Titanic. Josika-Herceg was a Hungarian emigre (like Wells), a diplomat and author.
