Hayes, 1694/5. Small 8vo. 216 pp. Contemporary marbled boards with recent sprinkled calf spine, gilt olive morocco label. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE POETRY COLLECTION BY CAMBRIDGE MEN, IN LATIN, GREEK, HEBREW, FRENCH AND ENGLISH - LAMENTING THE DEATH OF MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS.
Condition
Light rubbing, toning to binding, text with minor occasional soiling, creasing. Very good.
- Provenance
Modern bookplate of J. O. Edwards on fp. Includes a 94-line elegy by Ambrose Philips (1674-1749), then an undergraduate at St. John's College. This was his first appearance in print. He went on to a successful career as a poet, dramatist, translator and journalist. He came to be mockingly called "Namby Pamby" as a result of his trochaics for children, but Johnson admired his juvenile poems and said that he was "eminent for bravery and skill with the sword." Wing C342.
